OUR STORY

Ten years on the cutting board.

A Korean restaurant in the middle of an Insadong alley, under timber beams and a folk-painting tiger.

— CHAPTER 01

Ten years in the middle of an Insadong alley.

Doma Insadong is a Korean restaurant at 6-1 Insadong 8-gil, in the middle of an alley lined with craft shops and tea houses. The business has been registered at this address since 2017, and we have been cooking sotbap — rice steamed to order in its own stone pot — for close to ten years. Many guests walk over after seeing Gyeongbokgung Palace, Gwanghwamun, Bukchon, Jogyesa Temple or Cheonggyecheon, which makes this a Korean restaurant as much for visitors as for the neighbourhood. Traditional Korean culture and traditional Korean food, still alive in the middle of a very modern downtown.

A spoonful of the twenty-year soybean paste stew at Doma Insadong
FIG. 02CHAPTER 02

— CHAPTER 02

A soybean paste stew twenty years in the making.

Our glass door says, in Korean, “the best soybean paste stew in Seoul.” That is our own claim and we stand behind it: it is the dish we have been making the same way for twenty years, and it comes with every sotbap set and every charcoal-grilled set on the menu. You can also order it on its own for ₩8,000. At a Korean restaurant, we think everything is judged by the bowl of stew.

Timber columns and salvaged doors inside Doma Insadong, a Korean restaurant in Insadong

— CHAPTER 03

Timber beams and a folk-painting tiger.

Above the entrance hangs a minhwa — Korean folk painting — of tigers with magpies, rabbits, a cauldron and an open fire. Inside, thick timber columns, walls built from salvaged old doors and low pendant lamps set the room. For makgeolli we pour Boksoondoga, Jipyeong and Buja Makgeolli, with Sejan Makgeolli served as an aperitif. The idea is simple: a Korean restaurant should look and feel like one, not only taste like one.

The Korean menu board at Doma Insadong 1

— CHAPTER 04

Menus in four languages.

We keep printed menus in Korean, English, Japanese and Chinese, and each dish lists its ingredients and how it is cooked — so a first visit to a Korean restaurant does not have to start with guesswork. The gondre and lotus-root sotbap has a vegetarian option; just ask a member of staff. Takeaway is available alongside dining in.

I loved the seasoned thistle rice hot pot! It's the kind of meal that reminds you how great simple rice can taste. The beef soybean paste soup included in the set was a perfect match and really brought out the flavors of the rice. This meal was pure comfort food. Highly recommended for anyone craving authentic hot pot rice and bean paste soup. — Seasoned thistle with rice in a hot pot set는 정말 너무 맛이 좋았다.

Can I make a reservation?

Yes. Phone (+82 2-733-9376) and Naver booking are both available on weekdays and weekends, for every service hour. Please note that CatchTable handles remote waitlisting only, not reservations.

Do you have menus in other languages?

Yes — printed menus in Korean, English, Japanese and Chinese are on every table. Each dish lists its ingredients and cooking method, which makes ordering straightforward even on a first visit to a Korean restaurant.

What should I order?

For a first visit, the short-rib sotbap set (₩25,000) or the beef and Jeju radish sotbap set (₩17,000) are good places to start. For a group, try the meat set (₩56,000) or the black pork shabu-shabu (₩24,000).

Do you have a vegetarian option?

The Jeongseon gondre and lotus-root sotbap set (₩21,000) has a vegetarian option — please ask a member of staff when ordering and we will go through it with you. Note that the standard set comes with the soybean paste stew, which contains beef.

Is there parking?

We do not have a private car park. Parts of Insadong are pedestrian-only, so the subway or a nearby public car park is easiest — we are about a 5-minute walk from Anguk Station Exit 6.

Takeaway is available alongside dining in. Delivery and which dishes are available for it can change, so please call +82 2-733-9376 to check.
